Physical Conditioning - Why I’m Running a 6-Week Course for Junior Squash Players

As a squash coach, I’m always looking for ways to help my players become not just better at squash, but stronger, fitter, and more confident in themselves.

That’s why I’ve created a 6-week online physical conditioning course: a 40-minute Zoom session each week designed specifically for junior squash players.

Here are the 6 big reasons I’m running this course (and why I think it’s such an important part of your child’s development on and off the court):

1. Physical strength builds confidence - on and off the court

When juniors feel stronger, faster, and more capable in their bodies, their confidence soars.
They move better, react quicker, and start believing they can reach the ball, win that rally, or handle a tough opponent. This course helps players build that physical foundation so they step onto court with belief, not hesitation.

Personal Fact: I was quite a shy person when I was younger, and working on building myself physically gave me the confidence I needed in many other areas of my life.

2. Physicality is the “hidden skill” in squash

So many players focus on technique and tactics (which are vital), but physical conditioning is what allows those skills to actually work under pressure. By improving strength, balance, mobility, and endurance, players can maintain good technique for longer, recover faster between points, and prevent injuries that often happen when the body isn’t strong enough to keep up.

Cool Fact: Squash has been found to be the most physically demanding racket sport in the world. Check out this article about it.

3. We don’t always have enough time to build fitness in normal sessions

During regular coaching, there’s only so much time to cover technical and tactical skills - and that often means the physical side gets squeezed out. This course creates dedicated time to focus purely on fitness for squash, without taking away from court time. It complements lessons perfectly and helps players come back stronger for their next training session.

Sad Fact: As coaches we know the importance of physical conditioning in squash, but it is hard for us to justify too much time to it whilst we are on-court and squash is a very technical sport.

4. It’s fun and social - not a bootcamp

The sessions are designed to be challenging and enjoyable. Players train together, encourage each other, and build camaraderie - all from home. It’s not about military-style workouts; it’s about giving juniors a positive, structured environment where they learn the value of effort and consistency while having fun.

Military Fact: The popular burpee exercise was created in 1939 by American physiologist Royal Huddleston Burpee as a quick and simple way to measure fitness. It was later adopted by the U.S. armed services as part of its physical fitness test.

5. Fitness for Squash is also transferable to many other sports

One of the biggest benefits of improving fitness for squash is how transferable those physical skills are to other sports. Squash players develop excellent agility, coordination, speed, balance, and endurance - all qualities that form the foundation of great athleticism. Whether it’s football, tennis, hockey, rugby, or athletics, these same movement patterns and fitness qualities give young players a real advantage. By training their body to move efficiently, react quickly, and stay strong under pressure, they’re not just becoming better squash players - they’re becoming more capable, confident all-round athletes.

Footwork Fact: The footwork patterns we practice to prepare for squash develop the fast coordination needed to dance the salsa, but are also transferable to tennis, football, rugby, basketball - all sports that need fast footwork.

6. Physical development now pays off for years to come

The earlier players learn to move well and look after their bodies, the better they’ll perform (and the fewer injuries they’ll have) in the future. This course sets them up with a foundation that supports their whole athletic journey - whether that’s competing at higher levels or simply enjoying sport for life.

Health Fact: 36.6% of 10 and 11 year olds in the UK were either overweight or obese in the school year 2022/2023. Full article.

Final Thoughts

In short: I’m running this course because I want our juniors to have every advantage possible - to play better squash, feel stronger in themselves, and understand how powerful the body can be when it’s trained the right way.
